Steel Drivin’ Man was a really good book. not just a tale about American folklore or folk songs, but about race relations in Reconstruction Era south, the beginnings of American Big Business and Capitalism, the adolescence of the black rights movement, American cultural theory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, political upheaval and Communist propaganda around WWII… and so...

Steel Drivin’ Man: John Henry, The Untold Story of an American Legend by Scott Reynolds Nelson
Reading now. I remember being originally drawn to the cover design about 5 years ago when I saw it at Schwartz. also, it reminded me of the book John Henry Days, which was a Justin rec. (this very well may also have been a Justin rec.) and something I still haven’t read.
Also, this is my...
Simon Winchester on Stoner
nyrbclassics:
It is tempting to think that this is an academic novel with all its trials and tribulations, but it is not that either. It is a much more tender thing. It is a novel based essentially on disappointment, because Stoner has a rotten marriage and a terrible time academically. But he carries on and develops an intense affection for his now much more modest life. It is a story of...

So I just spent $150 on shoes. really nice boots, actually. which I needed so I guess it’s okay?
also I’m going to Tahoe this weekend. is this something I should get used to as a San Franciscan? weekends in Tahoe? or is this only something that people who know people who teach the kids of rich liberal parents get to do?
anyway, I took off work and actually spent money on boots...
St. Petersburg: Paris of the North or City of... →
When G8 leaders sit down in St Petersburg next weekend, the ground beneath them will silently groan with the weight of the dead. Known as “the city built on bones”, St Petersburg’s foundations sit above the skeletons of the press-ganged slave labourers who toiled to erect it. Historians believe the remains of some 100,000 18th-century serfs are buried beneath its wide Parisian-style avenues and...

(that argument over the bar of soap!)
is an actual aside in the introduction to this book.
every time I sweep my floor it seems that the product is made up entirely of dust and pubic hair. certainly more pubic hair than I remember leaving on the floor and generally more than I feel my body is at all capable of producing.
sometimes I wonder whether someone else is secretly leaving their pubic hair in my room, but I’m pretty certain no one with access to my apartment is that...

my Tumblr sex dreams are more like Tumblr sexual-tension, sexual-undertone dreams.
my subconscious won’t let me break the bonds of Tumblr-friendship!
my subconscious really ought to get laid.

I’m quite intrigued by the parallels between the current state of the stories of Sherlock and the Doctor, both shows under the thumb of Steven Moffat.
they’ve both just faked their deaths and gone underground, so to speak, after a period of attracting too much attention and putting everyone around them in danger.
and I’m very excited to see where this takes them in the next...

my opinion of mandatory employee review meetings changed drastically when I realized how nice it is to be sat down by my employers and be told in no uncertain terms that I am awesome and they want me to stick around forever and ever and oh, here is a nice little raise, too.
in fact, I want to have more meetings like these. can we do it once a week?

I think I need some more decorative pillows.
I hope you know that all I want from you is sex to be with someone who looks smashing in athletic wear

I really don’t understand the (new) people that Follow me, or their motivations.
I may have just accomplished The Monumental Task
I’ve got to listen through it a few times before I’m sure.
crushing on straight guys since the day I was born
at least this one is super cool and let me down easy.
straight guys in SF are a sort of double-edged blade. on the one hand they’re super cool and liberal and gay friendly and that’s great. but on the other hand they’re super cool and liberal and gay friendly and that’s super confusing because I mistakenly think they want to make out with me. and I Definitely want to make...

tonight I did some sanding and made a bookshelf. it is not perfect (ergo I am a FAILURE) but it is pretty pretty. I still have to assemble the other shelf and finish them. I bought some tung oil to make them all pretty and stuff. never before have I finished the wood I build with. this is a step into adulthood.
no you can’t see pictures yet because they aren’t done and they...
I’ve begun to realize that my new favorite quirk of writing is the Subtle Capitalization of a few key words in a sentence.
I feel like it really conveys exactly the emphasis I’ve been looking for. not as annoying as FULL CAPS or as trite as italics, certainly much more elegant that the hideous underline and less blunt and textbook-clinical than bold.
it’s the perfect emphasis...

I’m reading the manual to this router I got for christmas and there’s a Spider Man quote in it.
it refers to him as “the cartoon and movie character”
in other news, I’ll be building some bookshelves this weekend and the rest of my week can’t go fast enough.
I think I’m more excited about this than anything else in my life right now.
